Meet Mateo & His Family
My Foundations
My family immigrated from Ecuador to the Great Smoky Mountains when I was four, and my parents cleaned vacation cabins for a living. My earliest memories are of working alongside them on summer, weekend, and holiday days, surrounded by the business owners and hard-working employees who kept our town running. Watching my parents and those businesses up close instilled a strong work ethic, a deep sense of personal responsibility, and a fascination with how companies are built and grown that has never left me. I started early. At 9, I resold Beyblades, HeroClix, and football cards I sourced on eBay to my fellow club members at the Boys and Girls Club. At 12, I bought a broken iPhone for $20, repaired it, and flipped it for $250; that grew into an electronics refurbishing and phone activation business that my dad still runs today. At 15, my mobility was impaired, and I was in and out of the hospital for nearly two years before I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, which is now in remission. My upbringing and health challenges taught me resilience and a zest for life that I'll always lean on.
Where I Flourished
Earning a full ride to Berea College helped me build my skills in business, finance, and accounting. At Berea, I helped a struggling USDA cattle producer enter the agritourism market, built an entrepreneurial network and program for at-risk workers across Indiana and Kentucky, and conducted research for SafeEvac before its $3M funding round. I advanced my career at tech leaders like Amazon Web Services and AllCloud, focusing on helping SMB companies and executive teams use technology to transform how they operate. I also ran the AWS apprenticeship program, a two-year Swiss-style apprenticeship where we partner with low-income, high-potential high school students and introduce them to different career opportunities.
Why Search
Over the past two years, I've had 100+ conversations with people who've taken this path, and I've also served as Chief of Staff at a search-backed healthcare services company. The consistent theme is that everyone who's taken this path is interested in it because they want to lead an organization where their work matters and they can make a difference for their employees and community. Given how and where I grew up, it's no surprise that my motivation overlaps with theirs.
What Does Long Crossing Holdings mean?
I was born in Ecuador, raised in East TN, went to college in Eastern Kentucky, and moved to Seattle (where I met my wife) before heading to Chicago. My wife's parents crossed from Mumbai to Chicago on their own. Neither family arrived with much. What they had was hard work and the belief that what you build should outlast you. Long Crossing is named for those journeys and for the one every owner eventually faces: handing off a business built over a lifetime. My goal is to make that crossing good for the owner, the employees, and the customers who depend on it, and then to run the business for the long haul.
